SPEECH THERAPY: What do you know about speech therapy?

What is speech-language therapy?

Speech-language therapy is the treatment for children and adults with speech and/ or language disorders.


Language disorders include:

· Having a limited vocabulary

· Difficulty in understanding language (Receptive Language Disorder)

· Difficulty in forming sentences and

· Difficulty in using language appropriately (Expressive Language Disorder)

Speech disorders include:

· Difficulty in speaking and pronouncing sounds clearly (articulation disorders)

· Difficulty in speaking fluently (Ex: stammering) (fluency disorders)

· Tiredness in voice, difficulty in increasing loudness, change in quality of voice (hoarseness, breathiness, etc.) (voice disorders)


Who gives speech-language therapy?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), also known as speech therapists are graduates in the field of speech and hearing sciences who have completed a 4-year bachelor’s program and/or a 2-year master’s program. They are well trained in development of human communication, and in treatment of its disorders. Apart from speech and language disorders, SLPs also treat neuro-communication disorders (aphasia, dysarthria, etc.), problems in feeding and swallowing disorders.


Who needs to attend speech-language therapy?

Both children and adults can avail speech therapy services. Children with speech and language delay, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or any other speech disorders (Ex: stammering) that develop in childhood may require speech and language therapy. Adults with speech impairments caused by an injury or illness, such as stroke or brain injury may require speech and language therapy.


Where to get speech therapy services?

Speech therapy services are given in multi-specialty hospitals, private clinics, few schools and online (tele-therapy services)

What is done in speech therapy?

Initially, the SLP would evaluate the client for the concern reported in detail for 1 or 2 sessions. Based on the evaluation, therapy sessions would be assigned. In the therapy session, the SLP will provide speech therapy services for the client using specific speech and language techniques and materials like pictures, books, ongoing events, etc. Home program and therapy plans will be given after the session for practice at home.


Role of family:

Family and/ or caregiver play a key role in the success of the client’s progress in speech and language therapy. Family’s support will ensure continuous progress and carryover of new skills to the client. Overcoming a speech and language disorder can take time and effort. So, it is important that all family members be patient, supportive and work meticulously.
