SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT CHART (0-4 YEARS)

For those who ask me "How do I know if my child's speech and language skills are developing normally?". Here is a basic speech and language development chart that will guide you to monitor your child's development.

0-3 months:

· Startles to loud sounds

· Turns head in the direction of the sound

· Quiets or smiles when spoken to

· Recognizes familiar voices

· Makes pleasure sounds

· Makes different crying patterns

· Smiles on seeing familiar faces

4-6 months:

· Looks in the direction of sounds

· Pays attention to music

· Makes various sound combinations (Babbles)

· Makes different sounds while playing

7-12 months:

· Listens when spoken to

· Recognizes common objects

· Understands negation (“no”)

· Responds to simple commands

· Babbles with inflection

· Vocalizes to gain attention

· Imitates different speech sounds

· Produces single word utterances may be unclear

13-18 months:

· Produces at least three words

· Imitates adult speech patterns

· Understands speech-gesture relation (e.g.: ‘bye’- waves hand)

· Identifies a few major body parts

· Identifies objects or pictures in a book when named

· Follows simple commands

· Requests for more

19-24 months:

· Understands and asks simple ‘What’ questions

· Identifies at least five major body parts

· Learns new words every month

· Produces two-word combinations

· Uses common pronouns

2-3 years:

· Follows simple two-step commands

· Expresses toilet needs through vocalization

· Makes two-three-word combinations

· Uses simple grammatical structures (prepositions, articles, verbs, plurals, irregular past tense forms)

· Exhibits multiple grammatical errors

3-4 years:

· Follows 3 step commands

· Understands and asks what, who, where, and why questions

· Produces simple phrases and 4-6-word sentences

· Talks about activities done

· Can say his name, age, and gender

· Uses some past and future tense verbs, conjunctions, regular plurals, and possessives
